MID-certified charging station: What is it, and how can you earn money with ERE certificates?
People who charge an electric car at home often focus primarily on a charging station’s charging capacity, the app, and features such as load balancing or solar-powered charging.
But since 2026, another feature has become important: a MID-certified energy meter.
With a suitable MID-certified charging station, you can participate in the ERE program. This means every kWh you charge into your electric car at home can earn you money.
And that can really add up.
What is a MID-certified charging station?
MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive. Simply put, this means that the energy meter in the charging station is certified according to European standards to measure electricity consumption accurately and verifiably.
This is important, for example, when claiming charging costs from an employer.
Since 2026, such a MID meter has had another interesting advantage. Under certain conditions, the measured charging current can be used for the Dutch ERE scheme.
For this, the MID meter must be integrated into the charging station, and it must be possible to clearly determine how much electricity actually went to the electric vehicle.
What are ERE certificates?
ERE stands for Emissions Reduction Unit.
Electric driving results in lower CO₂ emissions than driving on gasoline or diesel. Within the Dutch system, these avoided emissions can be converted into tradable EREs.
One ERE represents one kilogram of avoided CO₂ emissions across the entire supply chain.
Why does this have financial value?
Companies that supply fossil fuels to the Dutch transportation sector are required to continuously reduce transportation emissions. One way they can do this is by purchasing EREs generated elsewhere.
So you can think of it, to some extent, as the principle “the polluter pays.”
The electric kilometers you drive help make the transportation sector more sustainable. The corresponding emission reduction has value, and a portion of that value can go to you as the owner of the charging station.
So it’s not simply a government subsidy fund. EREs are actually traded, and the price is determined by supply and demand.

What can the ERE scheme yield?
The value of EREs is not fixed and may change.
Currently, as a rough estimate, you can expect approximately €0.12 to €0.15 net per kWh charged at home, depending on the market price and the costs charged by your registration service provider.
A simple example.
Suppose:
you drive 20,000 kilometers per year
about 10,000 kilometers of that you charge at home
your electric car averages about 5 kilometers per 1 kWh
so you charge approximately 2,000 kWh per year at home
With a net ERE reimbursement of approximately €0.13 per kWh, that amounts to:
2,000 kWh × €0.13 = approximately €260 per year
If you charge virtually all of your 20,000 kilometers at home, you’ll end up with a consumption of about 4,000 kWh, and the reimbursement could reach €500 per year.
That suddenly makes choosing an MID-certified charging station a lot more appealing.
Please note: The ERE rate fluctuates. Therefore, consider the amounts above as an estimate rather than a guaranteed annual return.
Do you already have a MID-certified charging station?
In that case, of course, you don’t need to buy a new charging station right away.
Many existing charging stations already have a suitable MID meter. In that case, you can check whether your charging station is compatible and register it with a registration service provider.

Once connected, eligible charging sessions are automatically recorded. Joulo then handles the booking and sale of the EREs.
A charging station should be part of your energy system

1. Zaptec Go 2
The Zaptec Go 2 is currently one of our most popular charging stations.
It’s compact, can charge at up to 22 kW, and features an integrated MID-certified meter. When paired with Zaptec Sense, the charging station can account for household energy consumption and charge using available solar power.
The Zaptec Go 2 can also automatically switch between single-phase and three-phase charging. This allows it to start charging even with a relatively small surplus of solar power.
Another interesting feature is that the hardware is designed for bidirectional charging, V2H, and V2G.
However, we must immediately make a note regarding this.
Although the hardware is capable of this, it’s not yet possible in the Netherlands to simply plug in any compatible electric vehicle and then power your home from the car. Car manufacturers, charging station manufacturers, communication protocols, grid codes, and standards such as ISO 15118-20 all need to be properly aligned.
That market is still very much in development.
Therefore, think of the Zaptec Go 2 primarily as bidirectional-ready. The necessary hardware is built in, but V2H and V2G are not yet universal plug-and-play features in practice.

2. Enphase IQ EV Charger 2
Do you already have solar panels or a home battery from Enphase? If so, we think the Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 is a very logical choice.
The charging station becomes part of the Enphase Energy System and therefore integrates seamlessly with the rest of the installation.
It features an integrated MID-certified meter, supports dynamic load balancing, and can charge intelligently using excess solar energy.
This charging station can also automatically switch between single-phase and three-phase power. This allows charging to begin even when relatively little solar power is available.
In our view, the biggest advantage lies primarily in the ecosystem. Solar panels, a home battery, household consumption, and an electric car all come together in a single energy platform.

3. SolarEdge ONE EV Charger Pro
For homes with a SolarEdge system, the SolarEdge ONE EV Charger Pro is an interesting choice.
Be sure to look specifically for the Pro version. It features the MID-certified meter required for ERE registration.
Once again, the strength lies in integration.
When solar panels, the inverter, the home battery, and the charging station are all part of the same SolarEdge ecosystem, energy can be distributed much more intelligently throughout the home.
For example, you can take into account solar production, battery storage, home consumption, and electric vehicle charging. This allows you to much better determine where your available energy goes.
That’s exactly how we view energy management. It’s not about optimizing each device individually, but ensuring that the entire home functions as a single energy system.
Which charging station is right for your home?
In our view, there isn’t a single charging station that’s best for everyone.
Do you have Enphase solar panels and an Enphase home battery? Then Enphase is often the logical choice.
Do you have a complete SolarEdge system? Then SolarEdge is the obvious choice.
Are you looking for a compact, brand-independent, and future-proof charging station? Then the Zaptec Go 2 is currently one of our favorites.
It’s especially important that we consider:

- your electric vehicle

- any home battery

- load balancing
